Autumn Hawks and
Eastern Warbler Migration

Beginning in mid-August, hawk watch sites all along the east coast and Appalachain Mountain range begin their annual count. Anticipation for the peak numbers runs high as mid-September approaches. Broad-winged Hawks make up a large percentage of the total number of migrating hawks each fall, and they come through in thneir biggest numbers over just a few days. Huge kettles of swirling hawks can be seen in the right conditions!

Passerines on the other hand migrate at night. But during the day they feed, energizing for their arduous journey. Warblers in the "confusing fall plumage" flit from tree to tree attempting to escape identifiaction. Vireos, thrushes, tanagers and so much more pass through eastern forests on their way to Central and South America.

On this quick trip we will seek all things feathered throughout the Delaware River watershed region. Two of our main stops include the world famous sites of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and Cape May Bird Observatory.
