Located 1000 miles southeast of Miami, Puerto Rico is rich in history as well as nature. Approximately three times the size of Rhode Island, it is known for spectacular beaches, great snorkeling and wonderful people. It is also home to 17 endemic species of birds, many West Indies specialties and the most amazing bio-luminescent bay in the world!
During this trip we will explore many different habitats as we bird to our hearts content while also enjoying butterflies, plants and beautiful scenery along the way. We'll explore the mangroves with kayak and snorkel and venture into the "biobay" for an evening swim/kayak in the erie glow. We will snorkel along an amazing reef and hike the beautiful El Yunque rainforest.
Basic Itinerary
Day 1 - Arrival / drive to Hatillo (north coast) area with stops along the way for birds, butterflies and whatever else we can find! Night at El Buen Cafe
Day 2 - Birding and nature viewing on the grounds of the hotel in the morning. After lunch we will visit locations around the Maricao area. Night at Hacienda Juanita
Day 3 - Drive to south coast - exploring Laguna Cartegena and Salt Pannes at Cabo Rojo along the way. Night at Parador Villa Parguera.
Day 4 - Drive to El Yunque exploring locations along the way. Arrive at Casa Cuby late afternoon and enjoy an evening swim in the river. Night at Casa Cubuy.
Day 5 - Today we will explore El Yunque and surrounding areas. Bring your swimsuit to enjoy the mountain rivers after a hike! Night at Casa Cubuy.
Day 6 - Depart for Fajardo and flight to arrive Vieques mid-day. Explore the coast and relax for the evening. Night at Hotel Amapola.
Day 7 - Vieques birding, kayaking and snorkeling in the mangroves throughout the day! This is an incredible opportunity and experience. In the evening we will explore the Biobay to enjoy the glow of the mangroves at night. Night at Hotel Amapola.
Day 8 - Depart Vieques on flight to arrive at San Juan by noon for departures home.
